Betty Bott

Picture
Betty Bott started her career as a graphic designer. Later she chose an art teaching career which she found creative, stimulating, and rewarding.
Now retired, she enjoys printmaking, ceramics, drawing, and watercolor. As an itinerary art teacher in elementary schools in three different school districts in Virginia, Betty Bott worked with over one thousand students. In her more than 36 years, she met students with varied backgrounds and different levels of talents and skills. She observed that all students enjoyed the creative process, but some students were hesitant to put pencil to paper. By beginning a drawing lesson with doodling exercises that applied different marks to the paper and used the pencil in different ways, students became freer to draw the assigned subject. As a youth sitting in a walnut tree, Betty discovered this freedom when drawing. As a teacher, she discovered that doodling has value. It can connect us to our emotions and improve our mood and sense of well-                                                                            being. Doodling is an avenue to get in touch with our creative side and a way to                                                                  freely express ourselves without judgement.

The Doodle Tree

$5.99 - $13.95
Written and illustrated by Betty Bott

The Doodle Tree is about a young person exploring the art form of doodling. Sitting in a tree with a pad on their lap, the child feels free to make marks on the paper. They explore different ways to use the pencil to create different types of lines. The child lets their inner self take control of the pencil. There is no concern for making mistakes, no place for perfection, and no judgment. There is a connection between the natural world the child is experiencing and the expressive marks on the child’s paper. The child’s doodles create a tree.
On the last page, the reader is invited to explore their creativity by picking up a pencil to doodle. This book is meant to free the reader of preconceived ideas of doodling and drawing. There are no rules and no limits. Doodling is a visual expression of our inner self that allows our mind to open to new possibilities, to be free of judgment, and to let our imaginations flow in new directions. Doodling is for everyone. Pick up a pencil and discover how doodling can be a freeing, relaxing, and fun journey for you.
